Hey, Andrew -

My concern about Woodward's reportage is that his book seems to have been written while the author wore blinders. The orthodox narrative established by All the President's Men is so narrow as to miss the point of the entire affair. There is little or nothing about the CIA's role (which was comprehensive), the sexual nature of the intercepted telephone calls, the fact that after repeated and targeted physical and electronic searches, the FBI was unable to find a bugging anywhere in the DNC. McCord's sabotage of the break-in is similarly ignored (as is the role of McCord's henchman, Lou Russell) and...well, the omissions are so many and egregious that one can only wonder at his intent.

Regards,
Hougan

Hi Jim:

I'm a DC-based investigative reporter, attorney and author who has discovered your impressive work on these matters, via a roundabout way that includes current mysteries, JFK, then Roger Stone, and Phil Stanford. If you are in the DC area I'd love to meet you and swap tales over a drink or dinner. I'd like to organize a forum on these topics to break through the silence. In the meantime, thank you for what you've done! PS I once interviewed Bob Woodward at length during the controversies over The Brethren, and came away thinking he must be the greatest reporter of all or a fraud. He claimed to have six sources on the record that he'd be glad to show anyone for the weakest part of his book, which had been attacked by the late Tony Lewis. --Andrew

My interest and theory, since that none of the others make any sense, is McCord and Hoover's secret files. I suggest that Hoover's secret files were hidden by McCord and Angleton in the Watergate after Angleton "visit" to Hoover's home before the authorities arrived on the day of his death. Balwin's listening post was established shortly after Hoovers death and Hoover files were already departed from FBI headquarters before his demise to keep them away from the Congressional investigation that come in relationship to the military's.
Angleton's nickname the "locksmith" came from his visit to Winston's Scott's family after his death demanding his papers and previously to Mary Meyer's studio after her death and in search of her diary. That he was seen at Hoover's before Hoover's body was removed must be coupled with the fact that McCord was seen at Langley shortly before the "failed burglary" and on the second floor by Angleton's counterintelligence staff.
McCord's actions point truly to a secret agenda that points to actually two teams in the building that night and the sacrifice of the Liddy/Hunt team so the others could perform a successful one.

It's January 3, 1975. President Ford calls a meeting to discuss what to do about CIA misdeeds. Brent Scowcroft, Philip W. Buchen, John O. Marsh, and CIA director William E. Colby are present. Colby starts describing what the agency has been doing, and within a few minutes President Ford temporarily leaves the room. Then Colby says to the others, "Watergate is a code phrase."

Was this transcript unknown before the release of CIA documents in 2007?

Is there an "official" interpretation of Colby's meaning, and if not, what is your best guess? I'm working on a 40th anniversary summary of "The Lessons of Watergate," and it's mind-boggling -- the more I learn the messier it all gets.

Thanks for your book, "Secret Agenda," one of the best on the subject.

Sincerely,

Hi Jim,
I want to thank you for your work. I should have been reading your insights many years ago. How little we know about out history. I thank Oliver Stone. He got me to look at Dallas and it has changed my outlook on what we're told. It's depressing however that so many buy into the conventional wisdom. We're here in Asheville, NC taking a "Seniors" course on the US and Cold war and Watergate is told from the usual perspective. I plan to site your work for our last class Tuesday. Finally, I don't think we ever met but I did meet your late wife as we were in the Park Fairfax baby sitting coop in the late 70's. We lived in the Del Ray section. Carolyn was very nice and I'm so sorry you lost her a few years ago. I need to get some of your books. Highest regards, Rusty Bryant
