I thought for years that Dwyer was CIA station chief in Georgetown, and that it was he who first reported the suicide/massacre. In fact, Adkins was the station-chief and the first “outsider” to learn of the deaths. (Dwyer was Deputy Chief of Mission, and quite possibly spooked-up – but it was Adkins who trawled the short-wave radio for hours, hoping to learn what was happening there. In the event, he got a first-hand account from one of Jonestown’s residents who had escaped to the police station at Matthews Ridge. This is not speculation. It’s a fact.) Regards…

Hi Mr Hougan. I believe there may be a mistake among the names of survivors. Johnny Cobb is listed as having hid in a tree, when in fact, he was a member of the basketball team and was in Georgetown. The name that probably should be in his place is Grover Davis. I don’t remember him saying he was in a tree, but he did hide throughout the settlement, so I could have forgotten about the tree part. Also… I was not aware of the presence or involvement of Adkins. Because of the multiple accounts of witnesses who were nursed by Dwyer I always assumed Jones’ reference to him was a drug induced mistake or a command that ordered no harm to him, as he was still alive. (Hence the confusion about who Jones was referring to.) Too many people (the injured witnesses) said Dwyer was in Port Kaituma. I believed Dwyer sent the CIA the message because he received the news of what was going down at Jonestown when Clayton busted out of the jungle. But it could have been Adkins, too.

Great site. Very informative. I hope you will continue uploading articles as they are an invaluable research tool.

Did you ever investigate the relationship between the Laytons and People’s Temple? I don’t for one minute believe an educated society girl (whose antipathy toward “hippies” was documented from the outset) could fall for Jones’ hot air. Moreover, wasn’t her father – Lawrence – the head of chemical/germ-warfare (with particular emphasis on agricultural research) at Dugway proving ground?

Given the prodigious sums invested by the Laytons (why???) as well as Debbie’s shadowy husband – George Phillip Blakey (whose name cropped up in Angola) and their connections to the defence establishment – could it be that Jones was an agent not just for the CIA through Mitrione but the military, too?

Also, did anyone ever discover the names of the dozen people (including Jones) that originally journeyed to Guyana to conduct the initial feasibility study?

Don ~ I enjoyed reading your comment almost as much as I did the post itself, very insightful and I tip my hat for making the discovery you did and actually coming forth with it. Although let me ask you this, do you really think saying everything you just did above is any worse than talking about it on the phone (and potentially through the data center of course, lol) but it just seemed a little funny to me, thought I would ask. Also if you would like I could point you in the right direction of a few email services / tools you could use to anonymize yourself way more than you are now & thus have a little less paranoia Just tryin to help brotha… I am the same way as you mst of the time lol

As for the amazing case study above, i really appreciate the time you put into this – people have all but forgotten Jimmy Jones and the 900+ ppl of jonestown. Bring it up today and you will scarcely hear but a mutter of WHAT? WHO IS THAT?

To go even further into something not addressed in your case study which may damper dwyer’s whole “i was lucky not to be shot, ran into woods and hid and didnt go back, blah blah blah” story… But in the AE documentary they played on TV a few years back about Jonestown, they have tons of great stock/archive footage from that day which I had never seen before, in particular is the scene of congressman ryan & the other defectors / members of ryans party, and non other than Dwyer are all walking in a semi single file line and right as they get to around the wing area Dwyer takes a hard left away from the rest of the members toward what vaiugely seems like a gesture toward the pilot perhaps? We’ll probably never know, but the fact is that less than 30 – 45 seconds later, the first gun shots are heard….Then tie that into the time frame it would take for him to walk back there to where jones was giving his final sermon , so to speak , and it lines up perfectly, I mean literally perfectly… I have no idea what happened other than that LOL it hits pretty much a black wall after you get past that, and like Jim says, the witness testimonies are scarce and conflicting so quite frankly i dont think we’re ever going to know… All i want to know is just how exactly and truthfully were dwyer and jones linked…
I hope to hear back from either of ya on this to let me know your thoughts – I think this site is just great. I could sit here and read all day but gotta get back to classes!

Mr. Hougan,

I reading your book, Secret Agenda. I am curious about the backgrounds of two people associated with McCord that are rarely mentioned but whom are listed in your book. They are CIA agent James Everett and American Legion director Lee R. Pennigton, Jr.

If you go to my website, you will see that a James Robert Everett, Jr. was a judge in Nashville, TN. He was murdered in 1995. I am the one who discovered that and publicized it, because it was ruled a suicide by the med exam. and reported that way by the newspapers. Apparently he was running CIA drugs through the walking horse industry (as a front).

The Penningtons are an established family in Nashville, too, so I’m interested in the fact that a Lee Pennington served much the same role as James Everett did to James McCord.

You may just be able to refer me to where I can find this information. For example, you obtained some info from the Mullen Co’s employee records.
