To clarify: Bob Woodward had a number of sources, many of whom were "secret." One of those sources, or perhaps a composite of those sources, was dubbed "Deep Throat" by an editor at the Post. The editor in question did not know "Throat's" identity, but meant the sobriquet to refer to Woodward's most important (or most interesting) source - whoever it happened to be. It should be obvious, however, that Mark Felt was not Woodward's most important source. Robert Bennett was. But naming Bennett as "Deep Throat" would have been embarrassing to Woodward and the Post because Bennett's meetings with Woodward (in the offices of the Post's attorney, E. B. Williams) had a secret purpose: to carry water for the CIA and, in particular, its relationship to the CIA cover under Bennett's command. When the opportunity arose to put the problematical question of Throat's identity to rest, Woodward seized it and bestowed the mantle on the by then dithering and demented Felt.

Still one of the great reads of all time, and the amount of info is still extraordinary.
Only thing is that I doubt that Felt was "Deep Throat". Mark Riebling's "Wedge" analysis of the mystery man is more spot only. I sincerely believe they, "Woodstein", never had any intentions of revealing the real source and his real objective was to protect Kissinger and "Fubelt".
